In a firecracker-related tragedy, a 12-year-old boy died while undergoing treatment for the burn injuries he sustained after a kerosene container caught fire in Hesaragatta.

The incident occurred October 14 when Chetan was throwing crackers into a fireplace used to heat water in the bathroom. A kerosene container next to the boiler was lit and the ensuing blaze engulfed the bathroom, which was not attached to any room in the house and was located in the compound.

Chetan had collected leftover crackers from Dasara festivities. Along with waste material such as coconut shells, dry garlands and wrappers, he was throwing the crackers into the fire, said the police.

Neighbours rushed the injured Chetan to Saptagiri Hospital. He was later referred to Victoria Hospital. He died there around 6.30 pm on Thursday.

Chetan, an orphan, was living with his grandmother. He had lost his parents a couple of years ago. Chetan studied till class three after which financial constraints forced him to drop out.

His body has been handed over to his grandmother after postmortem. A case has been registered in Soladevanahalli police station.

Also on Thursday evening, a 10-year-old boy, who was bursting crackers, died after falling off the terrace of a three-storeyed building in Mico Layout.

The boy, identified as B Mohith, a class IV student of Sudarshan School in Tilak Nagar, was bursting crackers on the terrace with three friends when a big sound — reportedly a sharp cracker burst below — attracted his attention. A curious Mohith ran to the parapet wall and leaned over to see what was happening.

The boy lost his foothold and fell to his death. The incident occurred around 8 pm.

The son of a roadside eatery shop, Mohith was rushed to a nearby private nursing home, but was declared ‘brought dead’.
