Basavanagar is one of the fast developing areas of Vignana Nagar ward in Bangalore. With its proximity to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and other public and private sector companies, Basavanagar has become a sought-after locality for people looking to rent houses. With the increased demand for housing, a number of builders have launched housing projects in the locality.

However, there is nothing to revel about the infrastructure, especially the roads, water supply and transport facilities. For example, many roads are narrow and need to be widened to ensure smooth movement of vehicles. It is a Herculean task for motorists to use the road between Vignana Nagar Junction and Basavanagar Bus Stand. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) had taken up the laying of underground drainage pipes a few months ago. With the work progressing at a snail's pace, motorists find it tough to use this road and traffic jams have become a daily feature. Adding insult to injury, traffic policemen are not seen regulating vehicular movement on this road. "We have been suffering for the last few months due to the delay in completing the road work,'' said Subramaniam K, a resident.

The condition of Basavanagar Bus Stand is no different. With most of the space occupied by private vehicles, there is hardly any space for parking of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses. Parking of private vehicles is banned at BMTC bus stands in the city, But here this norm is being violated with impunity. "No one is here to stop autorickshaw drivers parking vehicles in the bus stand. They will not only use filthy language but also indulge in fisticuffs if any one objects to parking of autorickshaws,'' said one of the shop owners at the bus stand on the condition of anonymity.

Also, the bus stand here is bereft of a shelter, causing inconvenience to commuters during rainy season. "We have no problems to wait for the BMTC buses during winter and summer to some extent but it would become a tough task in monsoon. We have requested the corporator to construct a bus shelter, but in vain,'' said Venkaiah, a resident of Basavanagar.

Meanwhile, Vignana Nagar corporator Geeta Vivekananda said, she had requested minister for transport and home, R Ashoka to sanction funds for the development of Basavanagar Bus Stand. "I have already requested BBMP commissioner to allocate funds for development works. I am not in a position to pressurise him since the civic body is in a financial crisis,'' she added.

The corporator assured that the BBMP plans to widen the road between Vignana Nagar and Basavanagar.
