Following an Intelligence Bureau tip off, the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) was put on a high alert on Wednesday.
In an email communiqué, the IB warned the city police and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) of a threat to the airport.

The instruction came after BIA officials late on Tuesday night received a mysterious email informing them that a woman with explosives would trigger a blast in the airport.

Meanwhile, an unidentified person called up the BIA on Wednesday morning and warned of a blast in Chennai airport. Later, the police alerted their Chennai counterparts and the airport in that city too was put on high alert.

The city police and CISF increased their surveillance in the airport after the alert. Dog squad and bomb detection teams of the city police swung into action and carried out extensive checks in the airport. The CISF bomb detection team too was put on high alert from late Tuesday night.

The city police rushed two platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) to the airport late on Tuesday night. They said 40 police personnel including 20 each from KSRP and local police, have been deployed at the airport. Senior police officers like ACPs and DCPs would also be on duty at the airport.

A senior police officer said the police were patrolling the area to avoid any untoward incident. The city police did not provide further details on the threat call and email, but said they were investigating the matter.

Terming the threat call and email as hoax, city police commissioner BG Jyothiprakash Mirji said there was no need to worry. “It is just a hoax. Anyway we are watchful after the IB alert about a possible attack on the airport,” Mirji said.

Seconding Mirji, deputy commissioner of police (north-east) BR Ravikante Gowda said there was no need to panic.
“We have taken necessary measures by deploying more police personnel around the airport and are checking the vehicles to avoid any untoward incident based on the instruction given by the central IB,” said Gowda.
