A 25-year-old man, who complained of chest pain following a scuffle with neighbours, died while under treatment at St Philomena’s Hospital on Sunday night.

The deceased, Srikanth, a resident of Central Manufacturing Technology Institution  (CMTI) quarters,  was an executive with a private firm. On Sunday afternoon, Srikanth was reprimanded by his neighbour Sharmila for stepping over the rangoli (traditional decorative design) she had made in front of her house.  Srikanth was alone at home at the time. His mother and sister were visiting relatives in Mysore.

As Sharmila gave him an earful, Srikanth pleaded that he had not destroyed the rangoli wilfully, and that he had stepped on it accidentally. However, Sharmila continued shouting at Srikanth, claiming that he could not have missed it in the morning. Srikanth’s pleas made no impact.

Soon, Sharmila’s husband Ramesh Babu, 29, joined forces with his wife and started an argument with Srikanth. Soon afterwards, Babu’s relatives Ravi Kumar, 26, and Raghuram, 28, too entered the fray and began abusing Srikanth, who maintained that he had only stepped on the rangoli as he had not noticed it.

Neighbours intervened to bring peace between the warring neighbours. After taking rest for a while, Srikanth experienced chest pain. He sought the help of  friends in the neighbourhood and was rushed to St Philomena’s Hospital. He died while under treatment.

Witnesses said that Srikanth had been pushed around by his angry neighbours. Police said he might have sustained injury.  Ramesh and Ravi have been taken into police custody, while Raghuram is absconding.

Police said that Srikanth and Sharmila were frequently involved in arguments over petty issues. Ramesh told police that Srikanth used to pick up arguments with his wife in an inebriated state.

The post-mortem was carried out at MS Ramaiah Hospital.

The body was handed over to the family. A case was registered in Yeshwanthpur police station.

Srikanth’s father, an employee of Central Manufacturing Technology Institution, had passed away a year ago. The family had been asked to vacate the quarters by August-end, police said.
