It was her husband’s desire to marry a second time that forced an ailing Shaila Srinivas to commit suicide, police said on Wednesday.

Shaila, 37, jumped off the fourth floor of the Panacea Hospital in Basaveshwara Nagar on Tuesday night. She was undergoing treatment there for renal failure.

She had earlier told her realtor husband, Srinivas, 42, that he could remarry after her death. She had been unwell for the past three years, and her brother, Prasad, was taking care of her since Srinivas had ignored her medical needs, police said. The couple was living in Mahalakshmi Layout.

Srinivas, now in police custody, allegedly did not care about her health and also behaved cruelly. He used to tell her that he was not happy after her kidneys had failed. He also asked her to help him remarry,” H Hanumanthappa, police inspector, said.

Police said they had registered a case on Prasad’s complaint. Prasad reached the city from Mandya on Wednesday morning, after hearing about Shaila’s death. Srinivas was now facing charges of abetment of suicide and cruelty to spouse.

Srinivas had visited Shaila at the hospital on August 2. He reportedly asked his wife to arrange for his second marriage.

Shaila reportedly told a woman, Mahadevamma, about her conversation with Srinivas. Prasad had appointed Mahadevamma to look after his sister, since Srinivas had not been taking care of her.

On Tuesday, Shaila came out of the general ward where she had been admitted and went near the staircase. She asked Mahadevamma for clothes, so that she could change. When the latter went in, Shaila jumped to her death, police said.

Shaila had married Srinivas 14 years ago. Prasad claimed Srinivas was given Rs2 lakh as dowry. The couple had two sons, Arun, 13, and Anish, 12.
