Lending further credence to reports of his intentions to join the Congress, former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa was all praise for Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on Sunday.

However, Yeddyurappa’s new tune has not brought any cheer to the state Congress, as local leaders were guarded in their reaction towards the tainted leader.

Addressing a gathering at a function celebrating Basava Jayanti in the city, which was attended by several Lingayath pontiffs, Yeddyurappa was all praise for Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

“Sonia Gandhi had come to the state recently to seek blessing from Siddaganga Swamiji on the occasion of Swamiji’s 105th birthday celebrations. I have noticed one good thing in the Congress. Sonia always comes to the rescue of leaders in her party who are facing allegations and protects them. She never berates them. But our party is diametrically opposite to this. In our party, if someone is facing some charges, our party men see to it that they get trapped and get unseated from power. Though I have worked all these years, I regret to point out this sad state of affairs in my party. I am very much pained.”

The former chief minister also announced that he will not run away from the investigation. “I am not afraid of the investigation.  I have full faith in the judiciary and will face the investigation.” Yeddyurappa also announced that he will tour the state in the coming days.

However, Yeddyurappa’s sweet talk about Sonia has not made any difference to the state Congress leaders towards the former chief minister.

Opposition leader in the Legislative Council Motamma said: “Yeddyurappa praising Sonia Gandhi is just a tactic to threaten his party leaders. A person who was against her all these years starts praising her all of a sudden. I feel something fishy in his statements now. The party high command takes a final call on people joining the party and we have to abide by that. I do not think people would accept Yeddyurappa joining the Congress as he is facing many corruption charges and is being probed by the CBI. BJP has lost its credibility to run the government.”

Another Congressman, Dinesh Gundu Rao, an MLA from Gandhi Nagar in the city and president of Bangalore Urban District Congress Committee said: “Everyone cutting across party barriers has praised Sonia Gandhi for the way she functions. But on the possibilities of Yeddyurappa joining the Congress, only the Congress high command can take a final call. Many party leaders from the BJP and the JD(S) want to join the Congress. Our party leaders at the state and national level will sit and talk before taking any decision. We have our own reservations about Yeddyurappa joining the party. He is facing several corruption charges.

Moreover, Congress leaders have fought against him and exposed his government’s corruption practices.”
