Four days of heavy downpour had caused complete havoc in coastal and hilly areas of Karnataka. However, now, the showers have finally subsided. Hilly regions of Madikeri, too, are enjoying normalcy, and so are other areas situated in the eastern parts of Dakshina Kannada district. Water-logging has receded in low-lying areas.

However, now, it’s the northern part of the coast that is suffering floods and water-logging. The Uttara Kannada district received copious rainfall in the past four days, which has left all the six reservoirs flush with water. The Gerusoppa reservoir, which was receiving maximum inflow for the past three days, has created more  anxiety among the district officials.

If the present trend continues for the next 24 hours, a great volume of water will have to be released to the downstream, which may result in the flooding of villages.

The same applies to Supa reservoir, which received 40,941 cusecs inflow, which is a record of sorts. As on 5pm on Saturday, the water level stood at 568 metres. Kadra reservoir, too, saw high inflow, resulting in the opening of all six sluice gates to let out 4,000 cusecs of water.

Deputy commissioner of Uttara Kannada, BN Krishnaiah, who rushed to various reservoirs, has directed officials to alert people residing in downstream areas.

Although Madikeri was relieved after the rain came down substantially, interior roads leading to Bhagamandala, Napoklu, and other low-lying areas have been wrecked, making it difficult for motorists.

As a result of incessant downpour, the Konkan railway line between Mangalore and Mumbai was also disrupted.
