The food and civil supplies department says over 20 lakh illegal gas connections in the state would be cancelled soon.

Addressing the media, minister for food and civil supplies department Shobha Karandlaje said, “As per preliminary reports, it has been found that out of 71.5 lakh gas connections in the state, over 20 lakh are illegal. Now we are checking illegal connections manually. Once the final report is out, we will cancel those connections,” she added.

“All details collected from consumers will be fed into computers. In Bangalore, 90% of the work is over. Within a week, we will get the final data on how many of the connections are above poverty line (APL) and below poverty line (BPL) families and how many of them are illegal. There are over 20 lakh illegal gas connections. Most of the gas agencies have created bogus connections and diverted cylinders to commercial consumers to make money,” she said.

“Gas agencies are systematically misusing Union government subsidy amount on domestic cylinders. Union government is spending crores of rupees on gas subsidy for the common man. But by creating their own illegal gas connections, gas agencies are misusing the subsidy amount. Union government should take this issue very seriously. The state government is making efforts to curb this menace,” she said.

“In Bangalore city, most IT and BT employees have gas connections that are not legal. They have no time to run around the gas agencies. That is why they give extra money and get connections immediately. As per the information, about 5 to 6 lakh of such illegal connections exist in the city. The gas mafia is not leaking information about that.

“Now it is very difficult to get new gas connections. If common man approaches them, they say that one has to wait for two years to get a connection. But if a IT or BT employee goes and expresses readiness to shell out extra bucks to the tune of double or triple the rate, they give him immediate connection. We are taking action to set things right,” said the minister.
