The deceased, Santanu Setiya Phukan, and his brother, Indosan Setiya Phukan, had come to Bangalore on January 21.
Santanu committed suicide by hanging while his brother attempted suicide by slashing his wrist. Indosan is critical and has been admitted to a hospital.
They had completed diploma in agricultural studies in Assam and were scheduled to attend a job interview on January 24.
In this light, the police are investigating why the duo would end their lives because of unemployment even before attending the interview.
The police added that they were facing difficulty in interacting with Indosan because of language barrier and also because he was not in a condition to speak.
The brothers went to Bangalore City railway station early on Sunday to commit suicide. The elder brother ended his life by hanging from a tree on Binny Mill ground, near the railway station.
Indosan, who saw his brother hanging and gasping for breath, decided to kill himself by slashing his wrist.
Some passers-by found him lying unconscious. They informed the police, who rushed to the spot and took Indosan to a hospital.
The police managed to get the phone number of the duo’s parents through the mobile phone of one of them.
Their parents are expected to reach the city on Tuesday. The police said the brothers’ parents might be able to throw light on what drove the two to attempt suicide.
