The number of flights operating from the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) per day has increased this winter compared with last, indicating a clear drop in air turbulence.

According to figures made available to dna by the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the total number of aircraft movements in the winter 2012 was 309 per day, while it has increased to 357 in the corresponding period this year.

Apart from the increase in the number of flights, there are new domestic as well as international routes scheduled for this winter.

“New domestic routes to Surat, Dehradun and Imphal have been scheduled for the winter schedule. Besides, on the international route, Spicejet will soon start operations to Bangkok from BIA,” said BIAL.

The low-cost carrier starting October 27 will operate direct flights between Bangalore and Bangkok four days a week.

On the domestic route, Andhra Pradesh-based regional airline Air Costa is a new carrier to operate flights this winter. The airline will operate flights to two destinations on the weekends.

Starting of new routes and airlines this winter is in complete contrast to 2012. No new international airline was scheduled to start operations in winter of 2012 from the BIA. In 2012, the drop in air traffic movements was attributed to the stoppage of Kingfisher Airlines services.

An increase in 48 flights per day in winter 2013 has brought good news for the BIAL, which will soon be opening its expanded terminal, which is expected to accommodate 1.8 crore passengers annually versus the current 1.25 crore. The expanded terminal will be spread over an area of approximately 1.34 lakh sq m from the existing 72,000 sq m.
