Visit 3rd Cross at Benson Town off Nandidurga Road, Bangalore during the evening these days, and you will definitely come across a bright group of students setting up their stall, preparing for Iftar. Offering a delicious spread of samosas, spring rolls, milkshakes, cutlets and noodles, these youngsters have come together this Ramzan to raise money for a 15-year-old suffering from cancer.

It all happened when Tahseen Farzara Khan, a teacher at a government-aided school, came to know of the plight of one of her students, who is suffering from bone-marrow cancer. The mother of the cancer sufferer is a caretaker at the school and is unable to raise Rs 16 lakh that is needed for her treatment.

Khan while talking with iamin said, "I was shocked to hear about her illness. She is a bright student and I realised that we must do something to help her out. First we approached the school’s principal Ajaj Ulla Khan, who agreed to waive off her school fee. However, that would still not be enough for her mother to be able to afford her treatment. So I contacted members of Benson Town Youth Association to chalk out a plan to garner funds for her.''

Sarah Yaseen, president of the association, played a key role in arranging an outlet to sell food items during Ramzan. Fifteen youngsters volunteered to join hands and run the outlet to generate funds for the girl's treatment. "We know that we will not be able to raise enough money to completely fund her treatment; however the profit generated during the Ramzan bazaar sale should be a considerable amount. We are confident of collecting around 3 lakhs through the initiative. We have requested former corporator Gunasekhar to extend financial assistance as well, which he has readily agreed to do,'' said Khurrum Sheriff, a volunteer.

All of them gather at 2 pm and start preparing the food items for sale between 5 pm to 7 pm. They also accept donations from the public and kept a box for this purpose. "We will also collect plastic and other items from public and sell them to raise funds. We are planning to organise door-to-door collection to aid the young girl suffering from cancer,'' said Salma Yasin, the mother of Sarah and Sobia who are part of this team.

The youngsters are very happy with the encouragement from the public and support from their parents.
