In an attempt to curb the number of students dropping out of schools in the city, nonprofit organisation Child Rights and You (CRY) organised several street plays across the city over the past weekend to increase the awareness among them on the importance of education.

“On Saturday and Sunday, we staged 10 plays at different parts of Bangalore, including performances at Madiwala, Koramangala and near the Yeshwantpur railway station,” said Thangamma Monnappa, a senior manager at CRY.

The main focus of the plays revolved around education and aimed at imparting information to parents about their own responsibilities when it came to the education of their children.

Schools being distant from homes coupled with domestic responsibilities is one of the major reasons why children tend to drop out of schools, said Monnappa.

“Sometimes, students with younger siblings refrain from going to schools as they have to tend to their needs. Such siblings can be admitted tot Anganwadi centres so that the older ones can go to school,” she offered.

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE) was another major issue that the CRY team tried to highlight.
