This 51 years old Buddhist settlement is under a tight wrap of security, following the recent attack on Bodh Gaya in Bihar. The presence of Dalai Lama residing in the town enhanced the threat perspective for the town.

Inspector general of police (Southern range) ASN Murthy, who reviewed the security provided to the Buddhist township here, told dna: “Following the attack on Bodh Gaya, we have enhanced the security at the town. Normal frisking, security checks were being carried out in the entrance of the town and at the monasteries and the golden temple at the town. Bylakuppe is a major tourist attraction in Mysore district and many tourists come here every day, which has necessitated the enhancement of the security.”

Dalai Lama will stay at Bylakuppe till July 16. “We have deployed considerable force to guard the Bylakuppe township round the clock. The force comprises two companies of KSRP, 100 constables and 17 sub-inspectors and two officials of deputy superintendent rank. This is one of the largest deployment in a small town in the recent times in Mysore district,” superintendent of police Abhinav Khare told dna.

Being a Buddhist settlement, this town has been getting tourists from all over the world. “It is not just Buddhists who visit this place, but also westerners and other tourists. The major component of population comprises students studying Buddhism, having come from all Tibet and north-eastern states of India. The entire town has mourned for the last two days for the attack on Bodh Gaya in Bihar,” said Ramappa, a school teacher in Kushalnagar.

Close circuit sources of Dalai Lama said he was disturbed about the incident and has been in a sullen mood ever since he came to know about the attack on Bodh Gaya. In a brief statement issued by the entourage of Dalai Lama, he has condemned the blasts and termed it an act of terrorism.
