In a bid to allay the fears of parents and students with regard to the swine flu pandemic, most schools in the city are trying to make their students more aware of the disease and help  them take precautions against contracting it.

And while these schools are doubling up to maintain calm in the premises, Sudharshan Vidya Mandir is trying hard to bounce back to normalcy after one of its teacher, Roopa Anand, fell victim to the viral infection. Roopa was the city’s first swine flu victim.

The school, which had closed for a while, has stated that it will re-open on August 19. The institution has also planned to take all measures to shield the children from the virus.

Hema Narayanan, principal, Sudarshan Vidya Mandir, on Monday said, “We will be distributing posters, handouts and every necessary material to students to create awareness about swine flu. We will be teaching our children coughing and hand-wash etiquette. Masks will be made available to all students. Besides, the entire premises will be disinfected, as is the routine in our school, anyway.”

She was quick to add that the parents have also been very supportive to help the school restore to normalcy. She added that while her colleagues have extended exemplary support, the students have also done all that they could to demonstrate their support and empathise with the school authorities. She also implored the people of Bangalore to not let their spirits die, for the city is well known for its resilience.

Meanwhile, parents were seen trickling in on Monday to enquire about the re-opening day and the measures that the school will take to safeguard their children. They appeared concerned about the school’s future course. The school is visibly shaken since it is in the public eye for an unpleasant cause and its course of action will hereafter be closely watched.
