Adding to the heat being felt by the JD(S) for the remarks by its former MLA, M Srinivas, against Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha by-election from Mandya, actor Ramya, district returning and deputy commissioner BN Krishnaiah on Saturday issued a show-cause notice to Srinivas, asking to explain his comments.

The notice was served on Srinivas on a complaint by the Congress party district spokesperson TS Satyananda. Satyananda’s complaint also named JD(S) candidate CS Puttaswamy, who was seated next to Srinivas as he made his now-infamous remarks at the election meeting in Srirangapatna. Puttaswamy reportedly supported Srinivas’ statement.

The show-cause notice has asked Srinivas to explain within seven days why his remarks should not be considered as violation of the model code of conduct.

“Since the speech raised the issues of paternity and community of the opposite party candidate, it violated rule 2 mentioned in the model code of conduct,” said a complaint lodged with the election commission by Satyananda.

“Ramya had already got a jolt when her foster father died soon after her filing nomination, and it was nothing but brutal and inhuman to attack her like this,” the complaint said.

The remarks against Ramya may get her some much-needed sympathy in the Lok Sabha election, particularly as the JD(S) candidate was sitting pretty, with the party having MLAs in five out of the eight assembly segments—KR Nagar, KR Pete, Nagamangala, Srirangapatna and Maddur.

The Congress is hoping Ramya’s glamour would win over youth vote. According to district statistics office, prior to the assembly elections in May, 75,000 new voters had registered in Mandya Lok Sabha constituency. The Congress hopes that this youth vote would go to Ramya.

Party managers are also hoping that Congress veteran SM Krishna, who is sulking for having been marginalised in the state politics, would begin campaigning for Ramya.
