The clearing of garbage piled up on Ragipet and Avenue Road junction on Wednesday brought cheers to nearby shopkeepers, who were facing drop in sales due to unhygienic surroundings.
DNA’s coverage of the issue on November 6 was subsequently brought to the notice of Chickpet MLA Hemachandra Sagar, who asked the BBMP to clear the mess.

By 8 am on Wednesday, a group of BBMP workers along with the corporator P Dhanraj (of Dharmaraja Swamy Temple ward) and other officials reached the spot with a crane and lorries. The garbage clearing work continued till 7 pm, and eight lorries were used for the purpose.
Until yesterday, the place was carpeted with garbage, but now it looks much cleaner, and shoppers can freely walk around without having to bear with the stench.

This correspondent spoke to shop owners, who had raised the issue time and again with the BBMP, but in vain. Tabrez, who owns Roshan Traders said, “Due to the garbage pile-up, my business and health were at risk. The place wasn’t cleaned for three months, but finally there is a ray of hope. I will celebrate this with my family.’’

An excited Shetty Maharaj, one of the shopkeepers, said, “I was fed up of complaining to the authorities. No wonder this act of the BBMP has brought in tremendous joy to me. My efforts have finally turned fruitful.”

Arifulla, who owns Oriental Traders, wished for the same to happen frequently so that the area remains clean and he could continue with his business peacefully. He said, ‘’Ninety per cent of garbage was cleared on Wednesday. Due to stench, I couldn’t even sit in my store. Hopefully, the bad days are over, thanks to the media.”

Sagar said, “Thank you for letting me know about the issue. Communication has great power; a lot of things can change because of the media.” Dhanraj said, “We cleared most of the garbage on Wednesday from at least five points in the area. By Thursday night, we will definitely finish the entire work”.
