As their demand for hiking the fees for undergraduate professional courses was shot down by the state government, private professional colleges in the state have hiked the price for management quota seats manifold. While some of the private engineering colleges in the state have stated charging about Rs 18 lakh for seats under the payment (management) quota, the amount seems to be on a continuous ascent.

Students from outside the state, primarily North India, who are proving to be big money spinners for private colleges under the payment quota, are the ones who are mostly targeted by such institutions. The amount that colleges are charging candidates under the payment quota, when compared to the capitation fees that they used to collect five years ago, has increased by an astronomical 1,000%.

Five years ago, the capitation fee charged was Rs 2 lakh and now it has reached Rs 20 lakh. Electronics and communications, computer science, information science, civil and mechanical streams are the highest charged courses. Interestingly, a majority of these colleges do not provide seats under the management quota by taking capitation fees to students from the state, even if they are ready to pay the specified amount.

As per the details mentioned in a list that dna sourced from top private engineering colleges in the city, RV College of Engineering (RVCE) charges the highest amount, followed by PES Institute of Technology (PESIT). The seat sharing ratio for CET 2013 is 45:55, wherein 45% is the number of government seats.

Of the 55% of seats set aside for private colleges, 30% will be allotted under the COMED-K quota through counseling, and the remaining 25%, which is considered for NRI and other students, is being sold as management seats.

“There is a one-man committee appointed by the higher education department to oversee the admissions and fee charging process. If the college managements are charging heavy capitation fees, then the students can approach the committee and they will initiate action,” said HU Talwar, director of the department of technical education.
