In a bid to improve surveillance and combat terrorism in the city, more CCTV cameras will be installed on busy roads after the assembly election, said police commissioner Raghavendra H Auradkar.

Participating in an interaction with members of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), Auradkar said a proposal was sent to the state government on installing the cameras as part of the measures to improve surveillance and fight terrorism. He also sought the help of business houses in fixing the cameras.

“People ask when the American police could identify the terrorists involved in the Boston blast within 24 hours of the incident, why not Bangalore police. Surveillance cameras in USA are networked to collect all sorts of footages on the streets. Here, we are collecting footages on traffic movement. We had sent a proposal to upgrade cameras on busy roads.

Once the election get over, we will install advanced cameras,” Auradkar said.

Auto drivers input in vain

Soon after the Malleswaram blast, an auto rickshaw driver had approached the commissioner with ‘information’ on the suspects. The driver spend over five hours with the city police to prepare a sketch of the suspect, whom he had reportedly seen at the spot.

“It is very commendable that an auto driver came forward to help the police in identifying the people behind the act. Unfortunately his input did not help the police in the case,” Auradkar said.

He also recalled that an alert resident had informed the police about a surveillance camera installed in the vicinity when all the policemen were busy inspecting the spot. “Alert citizens definitely help the police in investigation the matter,” Auradkar added.

Reacting to questions about the staff-crunch faced by the police in the city limits, the commissioner said that close to 14,000 policemen work in Bangalore, while other cities, like Delhi for instance has about 80,000 policemen. He also added that there are about 2000 odd vacancies in his department.
