The joy of delivering a baby was almost lost for Kalpana just after two days of giving birth to a baby boy Siddarth. His grandmother, Shanthamma noticed that the baby had some white pearly spot in both the eyes. Shanthamma quickly rushed the baby to a nearby Primary Health Centre at Challakere in Chitradurga district where he was diagnosed with cataract problem. The baby was then referred to one of Sankara Eye Hospital's 'Gift of Vision' outreach camps at Challakere.

"When the baby was brought to the hospital he had vision problem, after careful examination we diagnosed that the child had cataract in both the eyes. The family at first was apprehensive for surgery. They were reluctant for the operation, as the child was just a month old but later with doctor's reassurance the parents changed their mind and were ready for surgery" said Dr Kavitha V, paediatric ophthalmologist, Sankara Eye Hospital.

According to the doctor this was a rare case. Following the tests the surgery was conducted for the right eye under general anesthesia. "We were very tensed when our baby was taken into the operation theatre. The hospital staff constantly reassured us that the operation will be successful. The surgery was successful and our happiness knew no bounds when we saw that our child was safe" said Kalpana. After two weeks following the surgery, the left eye was also operated for cataract removal. Siddarth is now able to identify objects around him.
