It is not only the summer heat that is rising. Along with temperature, the number of summer camps in the city is also increasing. Each camp tries to be different from others. The All Karnataka Children’s Association, popularly known as Makkala Koota, would start its 45th summer camp on Monday in an attempt to break from monotony and provide quality services.

The camp would run for a month. It would offer a wide range of activities like physical education, healthcare, drawing, painting, aerobics, dance, drama, home remedies etc. The camp has now extended its range by introducing other activities including light music, karate, group singing and abacus training.

The association received about 500 applications out of which 250 children in the age group of 6-14 years were selected based on performance in interview. Among the participants, there are 10 orphans who are exempted from the enrolment fee.

“The fee that is charged is only nominal. The committee members also provide lunch to the children on a regular basis. The organisation runs from donations received from the public and members. We are not funded by the government,” said HR Ramesh, the treasurer of the association.

Along with regular training, the children would also participate in various competitions. As part of the camp, the children would be taken for a one-day excursion outside the city. They would also be trained in first aid and made aware of traffic and general rules. The last two days of the camp would see the participants display the talents they developed during the camp.

Roshini Aparna, 12 of Athena Public school who has been part of the camp for three consecutive years said, “It is very nice and interesting as we learn a lot at the camp.”

Similar thoughts were shared by other children who will be participating in the event.

Parents too are excited about the camp. “My daughter Roshini enjoys being here as it has a homely atmosphere. We would be more satisfied if this camp extends to two months, so that the activities could be taught in detail,” said MR Srinivas.
