In an attempt to woo the rural masses, especially the unemployed youth, the Congress government has come up with yet another populist programme called the Karnataka Rural Livelihood.

Participating in a programme organised by the local Seva Dal unit on popularising Khaadi dresses on Sunday, rural development and Panchayat Raj minister HK Patil said the programme was conceived to tackle the unemployment problem in rural areas.

“We have decided to implement a rural employment scheme on the lines of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The Union government has approved it,” he said.

Turning to Union minister for medium and small enterprises, KH Muniyappa, who was also present at the event, Patil sought generous help from the Union government to ensure that the programme scripts a success story.

Patil stated that the programme would include initiatives to impart vocational skills for rural unemployed youth in various professions that could enable them to be gainfully employed. The vocational training would ensure that it is relevant to the needs of the region and the needs of the youth to set up their own small enterprises with easy availability of loans is another special feature of the programme, Patil said.

The minister also stated that the state government has decided to make it compulsory for Gram Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat offices to hoist the national flag on national festivals. Presently, the rule applies just to Zilla Panchayats. This would also help in increasing the demand for Khaadi products, he said. He also assured liberal aid for institutions promoting Khaadi garments and dress materials.

Participating in another programme, Patil declared that the state government would rejuvenate 12,000 tanks which are fast depleting in the state.
