Seven students from Delhi University, who are on a cycling expedition from Kanyakumari to Islamabad to spread the message of peace and harmonious coexistence with Pakistan, made a pit stop at Bangalore on Thursday. The students Praveen Singh, Vikas, Hars Dev Tomar, Despal, Narayan, Ramsewak and Radhyashyam on June 1 embarked on a 90-day-long cycle expedition that will culminate in the Pakistani capital.

Having covered close to 800 km since the rally was flagged off, the students arrived in Bangalore Thursday evening  and are expected to meet the chief minister Siddaramaiah and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda on Friday.

They will also visit National Law School of India University, Bangalore University and St Joseph’s College and collect signatures to support their expedition. The signatures collected during the campaign will be sent to the Government of India and the office of the Pakistani High Commissioner in Delhi.

“Thirteen students were part of the expedition when it was flagged off, but some of them fell ill. That apart, a couple of them who suffered knee injuries are expected to join us midway,” said Praveen Singh, the convenor of this initiative.

Also joining them would be students from Swaraj University Rajasthan, MDS University Ajmer and Meerut University. Dr Bhagwati Oza, a 77-year-old gynaecologist from Vadodara, who in 2011 cycled 3,000 kilometres from Kolkata to Kanyakumari with her women’s cycling team, would also be joining them.

From Bangalore, they would visit Tumkur, Davanagere, Hubli, Belgaum, Pune, Mumbai, Gandhinagar, Jaipur, Gurgaon, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar and Lahore on the way to Islamabad. Covering approximately 70km every day—35km in the morning and 35km in the evening—they expect to reach the Wagah Border on August 14 to jointly celebrate the Independence day of India and Pakistan. They will reach Islamabad by August 31.
