Call it a movement, a sounding horn or a heralding of sorts, bullet clubs across the country have started to turn heads in the recent past. But, what brings them together is the brotherhood and the spirit of riding together. The United Riders of Udupi, as part of their fourth year anniversary, are celebrating this brotherhood and riding spirit in a different way this year.

Sohail Muneer, who founded the club back in 2009 says: “While the anniversary is just a way to remind the members of the club that we have turned four, it is more to sensitise people about Udupi and the coastal culture which is almost absent today.” As opposed to a regular riders’ meet, the fest has more colour and coastal flavours waiting for the 150-odd people from almost 20 clubs across the country who are expected to take part in the event.

“Usually in a riders’ meet, there are events like dirt biking and stunt competitions. This year, we are planning to have all this along with cultural programmes like Huli Vesha, a traditional dance form in Tiger costumes, Yakshagana, which is also famous here, and other programmes for the guests,” Sohail says.

“We are going to have people from all parts of the country and from clubs like Rolling Thunder Motorcycling Club, Madras Bulls, and other famous clubs. We want to showcase our culture to them,” he adds.

Dubbed the ‘Thump’, the fest will be organised in Hebri, which is located in one of the thickest portions of the Western Ghats. “Hebri is near Agumbe, known as the Chirapunji of the South. We are showcasing bullets from the 1950s to 2014. Models people have never heard of and bikes people want to own are going to be on display at the venue along with some modified bikes,” he says.

Sohail has also plans to bring about awareness on the Western Ghats. “We have arranged a ride to this place called the Sun Set Point which is about 20 kilometres from the venue.

It is known as the evergreen forests and hosts many a bird and plant species. We have also planned a ride to the nearby Koodlu falls,” he says.

The riders will also get an opportunity to taste some traditional coastal cuisines like Neer Dosa and Chicken Sukka, and Adde and Malpoa. The riders’ meet is slated to be a two-day event and will kick start on May 11.
