Family-related problems are biggest reason for suicide in Bangalore

After three years of declining figures, the trend of ending life picks up again in 2012 in the city.

Family problems, illness and poverty were the main reasons for suicides in the city past year, with Bangalore standing second in the list of Indian cities with the highest suicide rate in 2012.

The breakdown of the causes of suicide in Bangalore in 2012 indicates family problems were the biggest culprit, responsible for 778 persons ending their life.

Illnesses were the second main cause (323). Poverty was the third major reason, accounting for 123 victims. Love affairs and unemployment claimed the same number of victims, 89 each.

As many as 54 ended their life for failure in examinations, while 32 ended their life owing to drug addiction. Twenty-seven resorted to suicide over fall in social reputation and 16 owing to the death of a person dear to them.

Five, according to NCRB figures, terminated their lives because of impotence, four over ideological causes, five over career problems and three over property dispute.

Records show that five people ended their life over dowry dispute, while two resorted to suicide because of divorce. As many as 118 ended their life over other causes. The cause for the suicide was not known in 276 cases.

At 1,989 suicides in 2012, Bangalore alone accounted for 10.4% of the suicides reported from the 53 cities, and recorded 16% increase over the reported suicides in 2011.
