A fifth semester engineering student of BMS College committed suicide by hanging himself on Monday night. The deceased, R Harish (21), was staying with his family in Arunachalam Street under Bhartinagar police limits.

Preliminary investigation said Harish was tense about his examination that was scheduled next month. His father Ramesh Kumar is an assistant professor in the same college.

Police said Kumar reported that his son was found hanging on Tuesday morning. Kumar went to his son’s room to give him a few tips regarding his studies. However, when Harish did not respond to repeated knocks on the door, he called his younger son.

Together, they broke open the door. Though they rushed the student to Bowring Hospital, his life could not be saved.

“He had been preparing for his fifth semester Bachelor of Engineering (BE) examination but he was not very confident about passing it,” Kumar said about his dead son.
But a police officer said peer and parental pressure could have contributed to the death. The deceased did not leave behind a suicide note.

Incidentally, in a similar case, Venkat Narayan, a 16-year-old student, committed suicide at his house in HAL on Friday after he could not cope up with the growing expectations of his parents.

Mythili M Sarma, psychologist-cum-psychotherapist, said parents cannot be solely blamed if their child commits suicide.

“There may be parental pressure but that is normal today. In the recent case,  the boy (Harish) is of an age when they look for self-identity. But it may be the negative energy, which is there in everyone, that might have dominated and driven him to take the extreme step.”

Mythili advised students to think positive and indulge in hobbies so that they are happy at the end of the day.

“Everyone has to live a fulfilling life,” she added.
