Gaurav Gupta, regional commissioner of Bangalore announced the date for electing the mayor, deputy mayor and chairman for the various standing committees of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Gupta has convened the first meeting of the newly elected corporators at BBMP Council Hall at 11.30 am on September 11. If all goes as per the schedule, the new mayor of BBMP for the 16th term would be elected on September 11 only.

It may be recalled that Janata Dal (S) on Tuesday decided to have a tie-up with Congress to enable the later to take reins of BBMP by electing one of its corporators as a mayor. In return, one of the JD(S) corporators is expected to be elected as the deputy mayor. In the election for the BBMP Council held on August 22, BJP won in 100 wards, while Congress in 76 wards and JD(S) tasted success at 14 wards.
Independent candidates won from eight wards.

With Congress leaders succeeding in getting support of six independents, BJP has lost the opportunity to elect one of its corporators as mayor of BBMP despite having 100 corporators in the BBMP.

Meanwhile, Prameela M, a BJP corporator and four others filed petitions in the High Court seeking a direction on whether MPs, MLAs and MLCs should have the right to vote while electing mayor and deputy mayor of BBMP. The High Court on Tuesday adjourned the case for hearing on September 8.
