Bon voyage: Bangaloreans are spending more and traveling more

Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Coorg, Shimla, Goa, Ooty among city dwellers' preferred holiday destinations.

Bangaloreans are traveling more. And spending more too. At least, for their winter holidays.

According to ‘HolidayIQ.com Insights: Winter Holidays Prediction Report 2013’, travelers from Bangalore are spending more in winter 2013-14 and taking longer holidays but traveling in shorter groups. The average budget per person per night is up by 41% from Rs 1,622 last year to Rs 2,283 this year. The average trip length too is up— by 24%, from 2.8 days in 2012 to 3.4 days this year. The standard group size, however, is down by 17%—from 4.1 to 3.4 days.

Beach and hill station destinations are most popular this winter, accounting for more than 80% holidays planned. Holidays are also becoming more activity driven—from jet skiing and surfing at beach destinations to trekking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting or skiing at hill stations or even wildlife safaris or coracle rides, travelers are looking for experiences to make holidays more memorable.

More travelers from Bangalore are opting for destinations outside their regions of residence, with 87% traveling outside Karnataka and 40% traveling outside South India. The most popular destinations among travelers from Bangalore this winter are the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Goa, Ooty, Coorg and Shimla.

This season is also seeing the emergence of couple travelers. According to the study, couples are emerging as an important category of travelers, accounting for 61% of all trips planned. Family vacations too form a significant part of winter holidays, accounting for 1/5th of the trips planned.
Moreover, couple travelers allocate the highest per person per night budget at an average of Rs 2,498, followed by families at Rs 2,049, single travelers at Rs 1,970 and group travelers at Rs 1,870.

The popular destinations where holidayers are traveling with their children are Coorg, Kanyakumari, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chikmagalur, and Gujarat.

Travelers have the highest budget for holidays in desert, beach and jungle destinations. This winter, the most expensive holidays are being planned to the Agatti island in Lakshadweep and the least expensive ones to Kanyakumari.

Tourists to K’taka

On the other hand, tourists traveling to Karnataka have a 6% higher budget than travelers traveling to other regions of India. The top destinations in Karnataka are Coorg, Kabini, Dandeli, Chikmagalur and Mysore. Travelers to Karnataka are primarily from West and South India. The state is a favourite for its adventure destinations, the top five being Coorg, Hampi, Chikmagalur, Dandeli and Bandipur National Park.
