Students graduating from Bangalore University (BU) starting this academic year will be able to access their degree certificates online. The decision was made during the varsity’s academic council meeting on Wednesday. “We have already conducted a preliminary meeting with software experts in this regard, and we intend to follow up with them soon,” said Dr N Prabhu Dev, vice-chancellor, BU.

Though the university will provide online degree certificates to eligible candidates, a hard copy will also be provided to students this year. “Since this would be the first time that we will be providing online degree certificates, we have decided to provide students with both hard and soft copies of their degree certificates to avoid any confusion,” Prabhu Dev said.

The varsity is planning to collect the fee for the certificate along with the annual fee. He said that the process of issuing hard copies of the degree certificate is often delayed at the university level. Last year, an estimated 34,000 degree certificates were issued by BU, and nearly 3,000 are yet to be dispatched to students. “The university is unable to dispatch certificates to candidates even six months after the completion of the course. My plan is to speed up the process and make it easier for students,” the VC said.

However, officials are yet to finalise the process of issuing certificates online. It was suggested at the council meeting that students be given a security code, like their registration number, to download the certificate. The VC has assured that the candidate’s privacy will be maintained, and that the online certificate would be made tamper-proof.

The varsity has also decided to stop dispatching hard copies of the certificates through ordinary post. It now plans to outsource the task to a courier company to ensure that students receive their certificates as soon as possible.
