In the wake of the recent Volvo bus inferno, North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has decided to provide training to passengers before departure, akin to pre-flight safety demonstrations.

NWKRTC has already put laminated charts, printed in English and Kannada, behind all the seats of its fleet of 27 Volvo buses belonging to Hubli and Belgaum divisions. It has also produced a video clip that will be displayed once in every hour throughout the journey.

The initiative aims to educate passengers about the presence of separate emergency exits in Volvo buses, the whereabout of hammers, ventilators, first-aid box and fire extinguishers, and also gives helpline numbers that can be contacted during emergencies.

NWKRTC managing director Umesh H Kusgal said crew of the bus will give a demonstration in the bus before leaving the source station.

“They will physically show hammers and other necessary equipments and demonstrate the do’s and don’ts to follow during emergencies,” he said.He asserted that the crew have been instructed to ensure availability of all equipments before departure from depots. “A red light is fitted at the exits. Hammers should be marked with different colours to make them clearly visibility,” he added.
Kusgal also said the safety video will be played in TVs installed at main bus stands under NWKRTC limits, so that even non-Volvo passengers get to watch it.

“If we educate all passengers, the knowledge will be helpful whenever they travel in Volvo buses,” he remarked.

He added that Volvo buses will be sent to the workshop in Bangalore for the installation of emergency exits, provided he receives direction from the government. Incidentally, the transport department has issued instruction to all Volvo bus operators in the state to install emergency exits.

NWKRTC is planning to print the dos and don’ts on the back page of reserved tickets, and of uploading charts and video clips on its website.
