A 20-year-old BCom student died under mysterious circumstances after falling from Shivaganga hills under Dabaspet rural police station limits.
According to the police, on Thursday, Vinay G, a resident of Bommanahalli near Dodderi village in Nelamangala, left home after telling his parents that he is going to visit the temple at Shivaganga. After reaching Shivaganga, he performed puja at the local temple on the same day.
On Friday evening, a temple priest saw a mobile phone and pocket telephone directory lying near a cliff. Using the the pocket directory, he called up Vinay’s parents, Girigowda and Annapura, who informed him that their son had left for Shivaganga.
Suspecting that the boy might have jumped into the water, the priest alerted the police who reached the spot and started looking for Vinay’s body. The body was recovered on Sunday. Vinay’s body was identified by his brother who reached the spot.
The spot where Vinay’s mobile phone and the pocket directory were found is known as Shantala drop, which is a suicide point. The spot is named after Queen Shantala, wife of Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana, who is said to have committed suicide by jumping off the cliff. This led speculation that the 20-year old might have committed suicide. The police said Vinay failed in his exams.
He left a death note in which he stated that he is responsible for taking the extreme step.
The police are investigating whether Vinay came to the spot alone or along with friends. The body was handed over to the family after postmortem. The Dabaspet police registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating.
