The world’s slimmest smartphone is here, and Bangalore has had a hand in it. The Ascend P6, measuring just 6.18 mm, was launched by Huawei on Thursday.

The handset, which has already received a good response from global consumers over the past few months, was introduced into the Indian market, after being conferred the European Consumer Smartphone 2013-14 title recently.

The PIM applications (personal information management) for the phone, whose brushed metallic look with a naturally curved base has been designed for the fashion-conscious, have been developed by the company’s R&D centre in Bangalore.

“Huawei’s R&D centre in Bangalore has two roles to play: help customise products for all local markets; and be part of the global management team,” said Anand Narang, marketing director (devices), Huawei Telecommunications (India). The R&D centre here, with 2,700 employees, is the largest of the company’s 16 R&D centres outside China. The company has 10 such facilities in China.

“With the development of the PIM applications, we have been able to put control back into the consumer’s hand,” he said. With Huawei’s Cloud Plus feature, suers will now be able to sore their data on cloud and access it through their phones. This feature too has been developed by the Bangalore R&D centre. Incidentally, another product developed by this centre is a WiFi data card which can be used to set up a WiFi hotspot through which as many as five users can access a single connection.

The company is also looking at local languages. As of now, Huawei offers phones in seven Indian languages. The potential here is huge. According to Narang, “As users upgrade from feature phones to smartphones, the consumers remain the same (for us). So, blue collar workers (who use feature phones in local languages) will be the drivers of this market.” This can happen when more smartphones are available with local languages.
