The failure of existing political parties to fulfill their promise of 33% quota for women in state legislatures and parliament has forced a group of city’s women to face the issue head on by floating a party for women — the Mahila Pradhana Paksha (MPP).

The new party is all set to take the poll plunge by fielding its candidates in Byatarayanapura and Hebbal constituencies, with a manifesto of not just sustainable development and women’s empowerment, but also a strong emphasis on electoral reforms to ensure that even a service-minded, ordinary citizen could take on the powerful candidates from strong political parties on equal footing.

An MPP delegation headed by party president Shantha Kumari met Karnataka chief electoral officer Anil Kumar Jha and submitted a memorandum with a three-point demand on Monday. Shantha Kumari herself is contesting from Byatarayanapura, while Dr Prabha Shankar has been fielded from Hebbal.

The MPP president said they will wait till April 26 for a response from the CEO, failing which party members will stage a peaceful protest in front of the state election commission office in the city from April 29.

Empowerment of women is the basic objective of the party, which is equally committed to bringing in electoral reforms that could eradicate the influence of money and muscle power from the electoral system so that the service-minded, best talents can also enter politics, Shantha Kumari said.

”This is not just a women’s party, this is in a sense gender equality party with 50 per cent of all our posts within the party reserved for women. Men too are welcome. Getting 50 per cent of the seats reserved for women in legislatures and parliament is our mission. We will launch a membership drive after the assembly election,” she announced.
