More than 70% voter turnout was reported in the elections of over 1,200 village panchayats in the state on Sunday, official sources said. Polling was by and large peaceful, and without any untoward incidents.

Officials said that around 80% turnout was reported in 169 village panchayats in Vadodara. In 154 panchayats of Jamnagar, 70.6% voters exercised their right to vote. Banaskantha reported 87% polling, whereas in 62 village panchayats of Aravalli district, nearly 80% voter turnout was recorded.

"The voting for more than 1,200 village panchayats in different parts of the state was completed in a peaceful and smooth manner," official sources said.

The State Election Commission had ordered tight security arrangements for the polling, which took place from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Officials said that the fate of more than 22,000 candidates are sealed in the 1,800 EVMs, which were used for voting.

In Mehsana, the voter turnout was more than 78%. The polling percentage was nearly 82 in Kheda. The village panchayats in Patan and Gir Somnath districts recorded nearly 86% and 80.6% voter turnout respectively, election officials said. In Porbandar, the voter turnout was recorded at close to 75%.

Polling was also peaceful in Dahod. However, re-polling has been ordered in Dahod's Goriya village for Monay due to a technical issue with the display of the EVM control unit.

Elections were held to elect panchayat members for 1,209 out of 1,423 villages as the remaining 214 villages selected the office bearers unanimously.

The counting of votes for the 1,209 village panchayats will be undertaken on Tuesday.

Earlier this week, the State Election Commission also announced that elections to two district panchayat and 17 taluka panchayats would be held on February 21. By-elections to vacant seats in other district and taluka panchayats would also take place on the same day.
