Former Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt and retired police inspector ID Vyas were arrested by Gujarat CID on Wednesday in connection with a 22-year-old case of false implication by an advocate Sumersingh Rajpurohit.
CID investigation has revealed that Rajpurohit was falsely implicated in an NDPS case in May 1996 for possession of 1.15 kg opium. Rajpurohit was arrested by Banaskantha police from his residence in Pali, Rajasthan. Although the police had been granted seven days' remand, he was released on the third day for lack of evidence.
Five months after his arrest, Rajpurohit had filed a case against Justice RR Jain, a former judge at the Gujarat HC, Sanjiv Bhatt and the Banaskantha police for falsely implicating him in the case.
In June 2018, the Gujarat HC had ordered Gujarat police to form an SIT under the CID.
It was revealed during investigation that the raid conducted by the Banaskantha police was made up and the drugs recovered from a hotel room were planted to frame Rajpurohit. It was also discovered that when the raid took place, Rajpurohit was in Rajasthan court and not Palanpur. The hotel register with the entry of Rajpurohit was found to be fake.
A senior CID official said, "The hotel's entry was supposedly made by the owner of the hotel or his son, but the handwriting differed from both. We have taken signatures of all the people involved in the case, will send those to FSL."
The officials also suspect that after Rajpurohit was arrested, some agreement was made with the police and he was released.
It was also revealed that a case had been filed against him as his family was not vacating a shop owned by Jain's sister in Pali.
"We have taken more than 15 statements and further investigation is on. There are many contradictions," the official added.
