Rains returned to Gujarat on Friday in all its fury – throwing life out of gear in several parts of the state. Several districts recorded over 10 inches rainfall in a few hours – flooding towns and cities and throwing traffic and life out of gear.

Ahmedabad too recorded 22mm of rainfall between 4pm to 6pm in the evening.

But South Gujarat, literally, stole the thunder. Valsad recorded 18 inches of rainfall in five hours (4am to 9am). The Auranga river here is already flowing close to the danger mark, prompting two teams of National Disaster Relief Force to rush to the district.

The collector of Valsad district, Vikrant Pande, when contacted said that the rain has stopped and water levels have started to recede. “Two teams of NDRF from Vadodara have been stationed here, but thankfully the water levels have come down,” said Pande.

Several areas of the city – Mahatma Gandhi Rd, Circuit House Crossroads, Tithal Road, Nanakwada and Hilar Road – were submerged, leaving commuters and vehicles stranded. Heavy precipitation was also recorded in Surat City (171mm) while the highest was recorded in Olpad Taluka at 191mm. Several highways were blocked in the region.

Saurashtra, too, faced the rain fury. Jamnagar City has received 11 inches (289mm) of rainfall in last 12 hours, which resulted into waterlogging in low-lying areas.

All districts of the state and 175 of the 225 talukas recorded rain on Friday.
Gujarat, so far, has received 332mm of rainfall – 42% of its average rainfall.

The Met department, meanwhile, has predicted thundershowers for Ahmedabad with heavy rain warning for some areas of the city. “The off-shore trough, from Gujarat to Kerala, has become more prominent which is causing heavy rain,” said an official with the department.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for North, Central and South Gujarat. Saurashtra too will bear the brunt.
