The Vastrapur Police Station on Monday filed a complaint against the owners of Hemant tyre shop located in the basement of Shreeji tower, where a major fire broke out on September 17. The tower is located at the Drive-in road.

The complaint was registered after the residents of the building found that the tyre shop owners had forged the documents of the area they used and were illegally owning the place in their name.

The Shreeji Tower society members found out that the basement — which was being used by the Hemant tyre shop owners identified as Hitesh Mittal and Paresh Mittal — was originally to be the clubhouse area of the Shreeji Tower. As per the plan of the society from the years 1992 to 1999, the basement was used as a clubhouse. After this, the basement was used by Hemant tyre shop as their warehouse.

It was revealed that the Mittals had forged the signatures of the chairman and secretary of the society (between the years 1994 and 1998) and illegally took possession of the basement (aka clubhouse) in their name. A complaint was then lodged by the present secretary Hitesh Patel of Shreeji Tower.

MM Jadeja, Inspector of Vastrapur Police Station, said, "Right now we have taken a complaint in the matter and further investigation is on. Both the accused are absconding and search for them is going on." The society members had approached the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, AK Singh with the issue after which he ordered the Sector-1 to lodge a complaint in the matter.

As per the society's allegations, the tyre shop owners had even used the fake documents and sold the basement to a lady. It was later also bought by the Mittals for the lady.

Electricity, gas supply disruption forced residents to move out for 13 days

On the afternoon of September 17, a major fire broke out in the basement of Hemant tyre shop. Around 70 residents from the tower's A-wing were rescued by the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) team as the fire started spreading. After the incident, it took around 13 days for the residents of the A-block to return to the house as electricity and gas supply was affected.

The residents of the tower alleged that it was due to the negligence of the tyre shop owner that the incident took place. They also alleged that the fire was deliberately made to claim damage insurance. The police are waiting for FSL reports which will ascertain what initiated the fire. Further investigation is underway.
