Surprising the party rank and file, senior leader Shankersinh Vaghela turned up at the party’s office in the city after a gap of nearly a month.

He had come to attend a meeting of observers for Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies in the state. Though he tried to portray that all was well and that there was no love lost with partymen, he continued to keep everyone guessing about his future plans.

Vaghela said he would hold a meeting with supporters across the state in Gandhinagar on Saturday. Though the senior leader and political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, had summoned him to Delhi on Thursday and asked him to cancel his meeting, Vaghela is firm on his stand.

Vaghela said to DNA, “I have not canceled my meeting with supporters in Gandhinagar and will try to know their opinion. People should understand this meeting should not be taken as a power performance as it is limited to only 1,000 to 1,500 people. Some people have deliberately spread rumours, but they should know I am in the Congress only.”

When asked why he wanted to seek the opinion of his supporters if everything was fine, Vaghela replied, “Actually I had met a group at my residence a few days back which had disappointed another faction of supporters. They had expressed their desire to meet me and, on their request, this meeting has been held.”

Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting at the party office, Vaghela said, “We discussed pre-poll planning and tomorrow we will all go and seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath as per tradition. Our president Bharatsinh Solanki, a few leaders and I will go together and then I will head to Gandhinagar to meet my supporters and well-wishers.”
