Retired Gujarat HC judge PP Bhatt to head Income Tax Appellate Tribunal

Former judge of Gujarat High Court PP Bhatt has taken oath as the president of Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).

With this, he has become the first Gujarati to head ITAT, which is the oldest Tribunal in India set-up in 1941 and often known as the mother tribunal in India.

High profile tax litigations involving around Rs 1.5 lakh crore in the form of 90,000 appeals is currently pending before Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, which is a final fact-finding authority as far as income tax matters are concerned having 73 benches at 28 locations across the country.

Notably, principal chief commissioner of income tax (Mumbai) AA Shankar welcomed the appointment of justice Bhatt and said that with the latter's appointment, tax dispute resolution will be quicker, effective, and judicious.

Notably, justice Bhatt is known for his reforms in court management techniques, capacity and infrastructure development, and introducing information technology in judiciary.
