The registrar of Central University of Gujarat (CUG) has knocked on the doors of Gujarat high court seeking the quashing of her recent repatriation order to her parent institution. Dr Shubhra Dey, who worked as an associate professor at Janki Devi Memorial College, a constituent of Delhi University, had joined CUG on December 1, 2017. However, in a sudden move, she was relieved from her duties and repatriated to her parent institution on February 17, by a communique signed by Dr Hemant Desai, deputy registrar of the university.

In her petition, filed through advocate SA Desai, she has stated that the registrar is the first officer of the university and they have not acted as they should have. She was also never given a common seal of the university, it stated. The case has been admitted and is likely to come up for hearing next week.

The university, while relieving and repatriating her, said, "The decision was taken in the interest of the university and according to the Central University Act, 2009. She was given enough time to learn the administrative ropes at the university level, but unfortunately, she couldn't discharge her duties at the university with accuracy, reasonable efficiency and professionalism required."

When Dey was not allowed to take her belongings, she had filed an FIR seeking police protection and had stated that she was targeted and victimised as she found irregularities within the university.
