Gujarat: PM Modi to kick start Assembly poll campaign from Rajkot today

Will visit Sabarmati Ashram in city to release stamps and coins on Mahatma Gandhi’s spiritual guru

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the BJP’s campaign for the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections from Rajkot on Thursday. The PM will address a mega road show in Rajkot, a significant city in Saurashtra, a BJP stronghold.

On his fifth visit this year to his home state, Modi will arrive in Ahmedabad in the morning for the two-day tour. The PM’s first event in city will be at Sabarmati Ashram, where he will release stamps and coins commemorating Shrimad Rajchandra, Mahatma Gandhi’s spiritual guru. He will leave for Rajkot towards evening. 

Meanwhile, Rajkot city is all decked out to welcome the PM. Before attending the road show, Modi will inaugurate the filling of Aji dam, the source of drinking water for the city, with Narmada water. Around one lakh people are expected to attend the road show.

Earlier, chief minister Vijay Rupani appealed to all Rajkot residents to decorate their balconies with lamps and make the PM’s visit no less special than Diwali. 

On Friday, the PM will visit Modasa town in Aravalli district, north Gujarat, where he will inaugurate two water projects worth Rs 552 crore. He will address a rally here as well, attempting to woo voters in Aravalli and Sabarkantha, two Congress strongholds. 

He will then head to Gandhinagar, where he will attend Textiles India, an event held by the Union Textiles Ministry, at Mahatma Mandir. The PM will return to Ahmedabad in the evening to address the youth at an event in ‘TransStadia’ in Maninagar area. The PM will return to Delhi at night.
