If 'aam ke aam, gutliyo ke daam' is a common saying in Indian society, it is not without any reason. Researchers have evaluated the nutritional qualities of mango kernel (gutli in Hindi or gotli in Gujarati) and have called upon businessmen and policy-makers to ensure that this high-nutrient food is not wasted.

Initial research has revealed that mango kernel has high content of Vitamin B-12, which is lacking in other vegetarian diet. They also claim that it is useful in diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cancer. It can also be used as an anti-aging cosmetic product.

In a presentation on Tuesday, Anand Agriculture University, Sardar Patel University and Jamnagar Ayurvedic University along with US-based Indian researcher Gordhan Patel shared their findings, at the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"Mango kernel can be used as a grain, nut and as legumes. Total kernel production in the country is equivalent to potato production. Since we are wasting almost all kernel, we are practically wasting entire potato production," said Patel in a televised presentation from New Jersey. Patel, an alumni of Sardar Patel University at Vallabh Vidyanagar in Gujarat, is a researcher with close to 120 filed and received patents and inventing about 25 products. He claimed that price of kernel alone can be equal or more than the the price of mango pulp.

"Mango kernel has mangiferin, which cost about $180/gm, which is used to control blood sugar. About 90 per cent of diabetes patients were able to bring down their sugar level when treated with mango kernel," said Patel.

Kernel is also found to contain 0.12 gm of Vitamin B-12, against a dietary requirement of 0.003 gm per day. It also contains nine out to 10 essential amino acids, a rare for any natural product. It is also rich in sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc manganese and phosphorus. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic properties and is known to reduce cholesterol.

"We need to do more research to establish the Vitamin B-12 content. Mango also balances 'pitt', cough and gas in the body. This is the only fruit, whose pulp, kernel, peel and even leaves have therapeutic value," said Sanjiv Oza, vice chancellor of Jamnagar Ayurvedic University.

Patel recommended use of kernel to make chapati, bakery products, sweets. "As the kernel has high oil content, one does not require to add oil to make chapati from kernel."
