The premier design institute of the country, the National Institute of Design, Ahmeda-bad will now be shifting its focus from design registration to patenting the designs of the students. To be ahead in the competitive world, it is important to start selling our designs and get them patented, said professor Vikram Parmar, Head, Intellectual Property Rights Cell at NID.

The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) cell had registered close to 80 products in 2016-17 and the number of last year is nearly the same of which 60 are in process. The figures were released ahead of the World Intellectual Property Day on April 26.

Said Parmar, "During their course, students have to work on various projects as part of their curriculum. Some of them create great designs and products with the potential of having a good market. It is very important that these products get due protection before being released for public use. Patenting the designs will give immense recognition to the students and identity to the designs. Many companies visit NID so if they want to use any of the designs or products, once patented, it will earn good revenue for the students as well. Hence, this year onwards we want to focus on patenting rigorously."
