Narmada: States owe Rs 6,100 crore to Guj

Neighbouring states of Gujarat owe Rs. 6,100 crore to the state for Narmada project. The Gujarat government revealed this information on Wednesday in the Gujarat assembly replying to the question of Congress MLAs. The government also gave the state wise break-up of pending dues and Madhya Pradesh topped in the list of three states with more than Rs. 4,000 crore.

As per the agreements signed among the four states which are the beneficiary of the Narmada project, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are supposed to pay fixed amount regularly to Gujarat for the water they receive out of this ambitious irrigation project. While Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are supposed to give money to Gujarat for the electricity generated through the hydro power plants at the Sardar Sarovar Dam site.

The Gujarat government in its reply mentioned that as on the date of December 31, 2017, all three states owe Rs. 6,100 crore as total to Gujarat. Out of this, Madhya Pradesh owes Rs 4,115.06 crore, Maharashtra owes Rs. 1,391.41 crore and Rajasthan has to pay Rs. 593.83 crore to Gujarat government.

The Gujarat government further classified this pending dues from neighbouring states into desputed and non desputed amount. As per the details, out of total pending dues, Rs 1,344.06 is non desputed while Rs 4,756.24 crore are desputed. In fact, the expenditure on interest that neighbour states owe Gujarat is as huge as Rs. 3,460.57 crore which is more than 50% of total dues and that falls under desputed category. All these three states have to pay Rs. 1,295.67 crore to Gujarat for the rehabilitation of the project affected people.
