Vaghji Boda, chairman of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) resigned from the Congress party on Thursday. The development came a day after he levelled serious allegations against the state government in connection to the multi-crore groundnut procurement scam.

Boda sent his resignation to the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee in which he wrote that his statement as a Congress member was made in haste.

"NAFED is a national-level body, and people from different parties serve as directors. (Ignoring) my responsibility as NAFED chairman, I made the statement under the Congress' banner. The statement was made in haste, and hence I am resigning from the party," the veteran cooperative leader said in the letter.

Boda, however, reiterated that he had no financial interest in the groundnut scam, which the Opposition Congress has pegged at Rs 4,000 crore, and said that he would resign from the Federation if there's any evidence of wrongdoing against him. He also demanded strict action against those involved in the scam.

State Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that Vaghji Boda had resigned from Congress to ensure that the party's name is not tarred in the wake of the allegations. Doshi dared the government to order a judicial probe in the groundnut scam.

The development comes a day after deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said that Boda was shying away from taking responsibility of the alleged scam and was instead blaming the government. He had also alleged that many of the accused are from Congress.

Patel was reacting to Boda's statement that there were irregularities in groundnut procurement in as many as 40 warehouses and not just one.

The groundnut procurement scam was unearthed last week when a group of traders and oil millers found stones and mud mixed in large quantities in groundnut sacks in a warehouse in Pedhla village of Rajkot. Following an FIR, 29 people have so far been arrested in connection to the case so far.
