Don’t be surprised if you see a woman constable taking down your complaint at a police station, another policewoman investigating the case or at least one woman traffic police at every crossroads in the city. For, the state government is all set to initiate an all-woman recruitment drive to increase the number of woman in the police department by 2014.
While talking at the state-level workshop on The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, additional chief secretary, home, SK Nanda, on Thursday said the percentage of women in the police department was about 6% at present and the government hoped to hike that to 15% by next year.
“We will launch special recruitment drives to fill in the gap and the announcement for that will be made soon,” said Nanda on the sidelines of the event.
“This will be part of our confidence-building methods among the women and we want more and more women to be visible in the police department,” he said, adding: “They will not only be used for the non-policing work, But for all policing-related activities.”
Nanda and other eminent speakers spoke on the effective implementation of the sexual harassment of women Act passed by Parliament this May.
The home department had already issued circulars to each and every commissionerate in the state to ensure that any organisation working under its jurisdiction should form an integral complaint committee and ensure that a woman heads it as laid down by the law.
Along with Nanda, inspector-general of police, CID Crime, Anil Prathama also spoke on the provisions of women’s safety in the state. The programme was organised by Suraksha Setu Society, women’s cell of CID Crime, Gujarat Police and Gender Resource Centre, women and child development department.
