Children are still encumbered by their parents' status. Even after 70 years of Independence, a son's life chances are tied to his father's relative status in the society, said a study undertaken by a PhD student of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA).

A fellow programme management student PKV Kishan, in a study titled 'Is the past still holding us back? - A study on intergenerational education mobility in India,' analysed 44,532 son-father pairs obtained from Indian Human Development Survey (IHDS) and found there was still a high degree of inter-generational persistence in education.

"Mobility is an essential marker for the growth and development of a society. A child, whose life chances are determined by the social or economic strata he/she belongs to and not by his/her industry in a rigid society, is bound to have no inducement to try and wriggle out of the low-level equilibrium and contribute to nation's progress.

The study further mentions that the schooling of parents impacts children's schooling, as educated parents value their children's education more. Father's education becomes crucial in the decision for the child to continue beyond post-secondary levels.

"At the top end of the education distribution, an Indian son has managed to break away from his circumstances while at the lower and middle parts of the distribution, a son is still encumbered by his background, and even his own effort coupled with external factors, such as government policies, has done little to diminish his dependency on his father. The situation is improving, though. Sons born in the 1980s are doing better than those born in the 1950s in breaking away from their respective circumstances," the study saaid.

Educational persistence is highest at the lowest level of education and lowest at the highest level of education for Muslims when compared with all others. Between Hindus and other religions, while persistence is highest at the highest level of education for Hindus, it is the lowest at the lowest level of education for Christians, Sikhs, Jains, etc.
