A 22-year-old married woman was allegedly set on fire by her spurned lover at her residence in Odhav on Saturday evening. The woman, identified as Geeta Shah, died during treatment in a hospital. Based on her dying declaration, Odhav police arrested 47-year-old Shankar Vaghela on murder charges.
Investigation revealed that Geeta, a sweeper at Tapan Hospital in Odhav, had got married to Sunil Shah, 25, four years ago. The couple also has a three-year-old daughter. She came in contact with Vaghela who too worked as a sweeper in the same hospital. They fell in love with each other and their affair became a topic of discussion among other staff members of the hospital. Following this, both were fired from their jobs four months ago.
On learning about his wife’s extra-marital affair, Sunil forced Geeta to end her relationship with Vaghela and did not allow her to work elsewhere. According to the cops, Vaghela, who then started working with Sharadaben Hospital, kept calling Geeta. Frustrated, Sunil decided to teach him a lesson and went to his workplace on Saturday morning. He scolded Vaghela in front of others and asked him to stay away from his wife.
An angry Vaghela reached Sunil’s residence the same day and picked up a verbal fight with Geeta, who was alone in the house. Suddenly, Sunil entered the scene and spotted Vaghela fighting with his wife. But, instead of confronting Vaghela, Sunil closed the main door from outside and went to call his relatives.
“He wanted to expose Vaghela and went to call other locals, relatives and family members of Geeta. Seeing this, Vaghela poured kerosene on Geeta and set her ablaze. He then tried to escape from the rear window, however, the locals caught him and he was handed over to the police,” said MS Sheikh, PI, Odhav.
