Jamnagar police constable who attacked Ravindra Jadeja's wife suspended

The police constable, who allegedly assaulted cricketer Ravindra Jadeja's wife Reeva following an altercation over a minor accident on Monday evening, has been suspended, Jamnagar Police said on Tuesday.

The cricketer's wife, Reeva, was attacked by constable Sanjay Karagia after the car she was driving allegedly hit his motorcycle. The incident took place at Saru section road in Jamnagar on Monday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, the unruly constable physically attacked and thrashed Reeva after the minor accident. He also allegedly pulled her hair before some passers-by intervened and stopped him.

Jamnagar Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sejul told reporters on Tuesday that the constable had been suspended with immediate effect following the incident and had also been arrested.

"An FIR has been registered against him under IPC Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault with intent to outrage modesty), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation), 509 (insulting modesty of a woman), and he has been arrested. The policeman will also have to face departmental proceedings," Sejul said.

Sejul assured all legal assistance to the victim, while stressing that the police department had zero tolerance towards such incidents.

"Jamnagar Police as a unit cannot, and will not tolerate any such misbehaviour against anybody," the Jamnagar SP said, adding that the state government had issued instructions for taking strict steps in such cases.

In addition to Reeva, her mother Prafullaba, and her 11-month-old daughter Nidhyana, were in the car at the time of the incident. Her husband Ravindra is playing in the Indian Premier League.
