Is Saturday's BJP bash Narendra Modi's launch pad for New Delhi?

Such mega celebrations are very unlike the saffron party.

Is it just a coincidence or a launch platform for Narendra Modi’s ascension to national politics that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is organising a mega event in Ahmedabad on April 6, its foundation day, soon after his induction in the BJP parliamentary board?

The party’s state unit has mobilised its entire organisation and is expected to gather a crowd of one lakh people at Sardar Patel Stadium on Saturday. National president Rajnath Singh will attend the function, something not witnessed on the party’s foundation day, even at the national level, in recent years.

Singh will arrive in the city on Saturday afternoon. Modi and state-unit president RC Faldu will welcome him at the airport. The BJP youth cell will take out a bike rally across the city. All cells, morchas, district and taluka-level cadres will head towards the city on Saturday to attend Modi’s show of strength. The party will felicitate Singh, Faldu and national general secretary Amit Shah during the event.

Modi had organised a big function at Kankaria when Singh had replaced Advani in 2005 as the party president following NDA’s debacle in the 2004 general elections. At that time also, Modi had mobilised the organisation and felicitated Singh.

“I don’t remember such a big function organised on the BJP’s foundation day during the last several years in national BJP,” a senior BJP leader said, while adding, “It coincides with appointment of state and national BJP president Faldu and Singh respectively, apart from Modi’s induction into the parliamentary board.”

The party had earlier commemorated the day by organising events and discussion sessions at taluka, city and district levels. It is noteworthy that though it is the national foundation day, Singh has chosen to make an appearance exclusively in Gujarat.

Even the state BJP has not organised such a function in the past, apart from oath-taking ceremonies after victory in assembly elections. “Why did the party choose Gujarat? They can organise the function at Delhi and Modi can come there. It seems the party is surrendering to Modi,” said a source in BJP. “Singh’s arrival and showering of praise on Modi and subsequent media attention will send a signal to the country and BJP cadres that Modi is becoming stronger,” said the source.
