The heat could bring out the worst in a person, literally! In a worrisome turn of events, 10 violent cases of crime have been reported across the state in the first few days of May. If psychiatrists are to be believed, it is the increasing heat in the atmosphere that has reduced the tolerance level among the people, resulting in crime committed in the heat of the moment.

However, the police discard these incidences as the routine crimes. In all the 10 instances, the most shocking part in these cases was that there was no reason to fight.
In one case, a husband assaulted his wife in Kodinar on Monday when she refused to give him money or the incident. In another, four people ganged up and stabbed two people repeatedly till the bodies were mutilated severely in Vatva area on April 21 this year.

Talking to dna, a city-based psychiatrist, Hansal Bhachech said that during summer, the level of serotonin — an important chemical in the brain— increases, which makes a person more aggressive. He said that the tolerance level decreases due to such aggression and eventually pushes a person to violence.

Bhachech further said that one should try to remain in a cool place and away from the direct sunlight to control the level of serotonin in the brain.

Talking to dna, SL Vaya, former deputy director, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Gandhinagar and expert in criminal psychology, said that violence is not necessarily due to the impact of heat. Any person in any extreme condition could react violently. For instance, in extreme winter too the number of body-related crimes could increase as the tolerance level decreases.

However, senior police officials do not seem to agree. Former commissioner of police, Ahmedabad city, and retired IPS officer Sudhir Sinha said that the increase in the heat could not be connected with the increase in body-related crimes.
